EGP Racing & Intrepid in the spotlight in Mariembourg 29/06/08

!

The Intrepid brand was in spotlight at the second round of the European KF1 Championship.

In his homeland, at Mariembourg, Belgian Yannick De Brabander really made an exploit by conquering two podiums.

A performance even more impressive for Intrepid and EGP Team given that it is

De Brabander’s first season in the top category…

S ide by side in the paddock, the official structures of Intrepid and EGP (Eyckmans Grand Prix) continue to cooperate to enable the Intrepid brand to reach the highest levels and to prove that the Italian chassis has a great

potential, so much so that its pilots can conquer the best positions and become protagonists!

“We all work a lot to find the best technical solutions, in order to achieve the best times” Jérémy Iglesias, Intrepid

pilot in KF1, commented. “Of course, results also depend on the weather, on racetrack configuration and on pilots.

But the most important aspect remains the performance that a pilot is capable of achieving. And with Intrepid, we

always have a chance to obtain excellent results”.

At Mariembourg, it was Yannick De Brabander who better mixed all these ingredients to lead  Intrepid to the top of

the podium. “It was really a great weekend” Yannick confessed. “After timed qualifying, where I set the sixth best

time, I felt that I could do something good. I knew that I would be under a little bit of pressure, racing in front of my

public, but my Intrepid chassis worked so well that I felt confident about the final phase”.

During the first heat, Yannick proved to be capable of rivalling with some candidates to the title

and set the second best lap time. In Race 1, the EGP pilot did better than pilots of the calibre of Bollingtoft, Fore,

Convers, Laine, Te Braak and Parrott and crossed the finishing line in third position, by setting the second best lap

time once again. “My Intrepid chassis proved to be very reliable and I showed another excellent performance in

Race 2” De Brabander explained. “This time, I conquered the second step of the podium. After my victory at the

Winter Cup on season debut, this is a confirmation of our competitiveness”.

Iglesias was less lucky and withdrew during Race 1, although he staged a superb 22 places recovery in Race 2, thus

increasing the points accumulated so far in the European Championship.

In KZ1, Norman Nato and Roberto Toninelli were very competitive at Mariembourg, but a series of race mishaps

compromised their winning chances. As the French pilot put it: “After setting the third time in timed qualifying, I

easily won the first heat, before getting a penalty for pushing another pilot. But that pilot had not been very

regular, because he had braked in the middle of a turn, so I could not avoid him. Anyway I finished the other heat in

second position but that accident pushed me back in 8th position, while I could have started in the first row. Then

my team mate Roberto Toninelli and I had a communication problem during Race 1 and unfortunately we collided.

Pity, because we lost precious points for the Championship. But I managed to finish 7th overall anyway”.

With a 16 place recovery and 5th best time in Race 2, Toninelli confirmed his speed at the wheel of his Intrepid-TM.

The same canbe said about Manuel Cozzaglio, 9th in the Championship despite a penalty for an early start at

Mariembourg.

Comments by Mirko Sguerzoni, in charge of Intrepid

“This European Championship at Mariembourg was yet another good

weekend for Intrepid. It is really exciting to see that a private team can help

a pilot reach the podium after he has chosen our chassis. Well done to EGP

Team for working so well and to Yannick De Brabander for showing that by

possessing all the necessary qualities, a pilot can achieve great results, even

in a category as complex as KF1. Our pilots have also obtained excellent

results in KZ1, and this shows that our technical choices were correct”.

Good Prospects for the European Championship

!

The fourth meeting of Winning Series Karting

had a special importance, considered the double objective for the racing stables in Belgium.

“On the one hand, our pilots had a good opportunity for scoring more points for the overall WSK

ranking and on the other, this race promised to be an interestingcompetition from a technical point of view,

because it offered a good opportunity to prepare for the European Championship, which will be held on this

same Mariembourg circuit”, Intrepid Team members explained.

The weekend started in the pouring rain, but evenwhen the track began to dry during timed practice, the

task did not become easier for technicians and pilots.  But that was not enough to destabilise pilots, who

showed good performances from the very first heat. At the wheel of their Intrepid chassis, Manuel Cozzaglio

and Norman Nato (KZ2) finished side by side in 5th and 6th position. Manuel Cozzaglio, who runs for EGP Team,

did everything he could best in his second heat and he posted the best lap. Pity for his bad luck afterwards.

Penalised in one heat and forced to withdraw in the final, Roberto Toninelli could not achieve other good

results. Luckily enough, Nato’s chassis remained as performing as it always is. Very relaxed after his third position

in the last heat, the French pilot confirmed his goodshape by ranking 5th both in the pre-final and in the

final. “I obtained a good ranking in WSK, but I am especially satisfied with the fast and constant pace that I was able to keep in race”.

In KF1, Glenn Keyaert made his debut in the Intrepid Team. “I immediately felt at ease with my chassis, which

I found very easy to drive and adjust. In particular, it allowed me to score the first points in WSK”. Brilliantly

7th in the pre-final, unfortunately he suffered the consequences of a bit of hustle in the final. But it was Yannick

De Brabander’s turn (EGP Team) to emerge. 24th at the end of qualifying practice, the recent winner of the

Winter Cup recovered as many as 18 positions in the final phase, helped by a well-balanced chassis. The final offered the opportunity to see the Intrepid chassis driven by Jérémy Iglesias and Jamie Croxford recover many positions, but after a qualifying phase full of difficulties, they had already partially compromised their chances. Now it is time to move along the same direction at the European Championship, at the end of June…

It is with its traditional motivation and determination that the Intrepid Team has gone to Belgium to face the

fierce competition that reigns at the highest international level. In KZ2, young Norman Nato once again fully

exploited all the good qualities of his equipment to show a superb performance in WSK, while Glenn Keyaert

did not regret his recent migration at the wheel of an Intrepid chassis: the Belgian pilot was able to fight at the same level as the best pilots in this category!

Glenn Keyaert (KF1), 7th in the pré-final

Comments by Cash Van Belle, engineer at Intrepid

“It was a nice surprise to see Glenn Keyaert (KF1) fight against pilotslike Catt, Convers or Ryall, even though it was the first time that he drove an Intrepid chassis in a race. This excellent result achieved by a private pilot shows once again the effectiveness and driving easiness of our Cruiser model. Our competitiveness was also evident in KZ2, as shown by Norman Nato’s good race, 5th in the final”.

Toninelli and Intrepid on the podium

The title of European Champion remains, now more than ever, the objective of EGP

Racing Team, especially in KZ1, a category in which Intrepid pilots have always been among

the leaders:

Roberto Toninelli conquered the podium of this European debut in France and Norman Nato

can be legitimately considered the revelation of the 1st of May weekend, while Manuel

Cozzaglio scored important points in the two races. Manuel Cozzaglio did a very good race

for EGP Racing and is now in 3th position in the classification of European Championship

KZ1.  Performances were up to expectations in KF1 too: Yannick De Brabander dominated

race 1 and Jérémy Iglesias played an important role in the leading group.
